Cornbread Tamale Pie

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 cup waterer or stock
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 cup corn
  • 1/2 green pepper, chopped
  • 3/4 cup cornmeal
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil


  1. In a lightly oiled skillet, saute ground beef and onion. Cook until meat is browned and onion translucent.
  2. Then add tomato sauce, water/sock, pepper, chili powder, corn and green pepper. Simmer for 15 minutes.
  3. Preheat oven to 425F.
  4. Sift and mix together cornmeal, flour, sugar, salt and baking powder. Stir in the beaten egg. then mix in the vegetable oil.
  5. Place meat mixture in a oiled 2 quart baking dish.  Top it with the cornbread mixture. Place in the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes or until corn bread is browned.
